A minor arthroscopic surgery performed Monday has knocked Rocco Mediate out of this week’s Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines, site of his U.S. Open playoff loss to Tiger Woods last June.
Mediate, 46, who gained a legion of fans in going head to head with Woods at the San Diego venue, did not disclose the exact nature of the medical procedure, the tournament announced. The five-time PGA Tour winner played Sunday at the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he tied for 35th after a final-round 75.
This was to be Mediate’s first return to Torrey Pines since taking Woods to the 19th hole of a Monday playoff before finally falling with a bogey, an effort that nonetheless gained him considerable fame. It was Woods’ 14th major championship, but he has not played since due to surgery on his left knee.
Woods won’t be at Torrey Pines, either, as he rehabilitates his knee. The Southern California native has won the last four Buick Invitationals and six overall. Phil Mickelson, who last won the Buick in 2001, is in the field, as is three-time major championship winner Padraig Harrington.
